Celebrating 75 Years of the Hawker Hunter

This week, the International Test Pilots School proudly celebrated the 75th anniversary of one of aviation’s most iconic aircraft: the Hawker Hunter.

Designed under the leadership of legendary British aircraft designer Sir Sydney Camm, the Hunter first flew on 20 July 1951, when the prototype took to the skies with Hawker Chief Test Pilot Neville Duke at the controls. Duke would later cement the Hunter’s place in aviation history by setting a new world air speed record in a specially modified example, helping establish the aircraft’s enduring reputation for its elegant design, exceptional performance and distinguished service around the world.

To mark this milestone, ITPS staff and students gathered for a commemorative flypast flown by Test Pilot Alain Lacharité, accompanied by Lead Hawker Hunter Engineer Johann Rosenstrauch. The flypast honoured not only this remarkable aircraft, but also the pilots, engineers and maintainers who have preserved its legacy and inspired generations of aviators.

The celebrations continued with a special evening reception, welcoming members of the Hawker Hunter team, alumni, invited guests and warbird enthusiasts to our hangar. Set against the backdrop of this iconic aircraft, the event featured displays highlighting Sir Sydney Camm’s remarkable contributions to British aviation, the history of ITPS’s four Hawker Hunters and their continued role within our advanced flight test training programmes.

At ITPS, the Hunter represents far more than aviation heritage. Our flagship Hunter has been developed into the 5th Gen Surrogate Training Aircraft (5STA), giving test pilots and flight test engineers the opportunity to evaluate modern avionics, integrated systems, cockpit workload, human-machine interfaces and complex mission scenarios in a real airborne environment.

By combining a proven high-performance airframe with advanced training technologies, 5STA bridges the gap between traditional flight test instruction and the increasingly complex systems found in modern combat aircraft. It provides students with the practical experience, disciplined evaluation skills and operational judgment required to safely test the next generation of aerospace capabilities.

The continued evolution of the Hunter reflects ITPS’s commitment to operational excellence, supported by the innovation, collaboration and dedication of our pilots, instructors, engineers and maintenance professionals. Together, they preserve the legacy of this extraordinary aircraft while ensuring it continues to shape the future of flight test training.
