ITPS Canada | Grumman HU-16 Albatross

April 17, 2025

The Grumman HU-16 Albatross is the heart of ITPS Canada’s Amphibious Training and Laboratory Aircraft System (ATLAS). This unique flight test training platform combines classic aircraft handling with modern technology and advanced testing capability.

Originally built for search and rescue, the HU-16 is known for its excellent flying qualities, STOL performance, and amphibious versatility. At ITPS, it’s been transformed into a fully equipped flight test platform, featuring six dedicated Flight Test Engineer stations for real-time data monitoring and analysis.

ATLAS supports a wide range of real-world flight test exercises, including testing of Enhanced Flight Vision Systems (EFVS), which integrates avionics, electro-optics, cockpit displays, and pilot workload evaluation into one comprehensive training scenario.

Since 2017, ATLAS has operated on the Great Lakes, giving students a rare experience in amphibious flight test operations. The HU-16 remains a favourite among ITPS students for its unmatched versatility and capability in test pilot and flight test engineer training.

ITPS will be arriving at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for the week, before heading out on a nationwide tour of flight test centres. We hope to see you this summer!
